The American Medical Marijuana Physicians Association believes that cannabis can help many patients achieve better health. Many patients going through traditional treatments do not seem to improve the way they need to. That is why they seek alternative means to find relief for their condition. Patients may experience relief from these seven medical conditions if they include cannabis as part of their regimen.
1. Cancer
Chemotherapy often causes vomiting and nausea. Studies reveal that cannabis can help treat these side effects. In some cases, inhaling marijuana can treat neuropathic pain from nerve damage. Research reveals that people consuming cannabis extracts do not depend on pain medication that much anymore. In some animal studies, specific cannabinoids may lower the spread and slow the growth of some cancers.
2. Epilepsy
Early research shows that cannabidiol or CBD may help control varying degrees of seizures. Experts are also looking into tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) for seizure relief. Of the two, CBD is more promising. A high concentration of 98 percent CBD with two percent THC can manage specific types of seizures.
3. Glaucoma
Researchers in the 1970s showed that cannabis can lower intraocular pressure (IOP) right away. It could improve the symptoms of acute and open-angle glaucoma. Unfortunately, the results are short-lived—after three hours, the IOC would jump up again. This means you would have to take cannabis six to eight times each day.
This round-the-clock treatment will keep your IOP down, but it will be problematic for your work and daily activities. Cannabis can cause low blood pressure and tachycardia. These side effects will decrease the blood flow to the faulty optic nerve. With THC drops, only oil-based drops can deliver THC. This form can cause serious eye irritation and does not lower IOP at all.
4. PTSD (Anxiety/Depression)
Doctors believe that medical cannabis can reduce the main traumatic memories. The cannabinoids in this drug can affect the areas of the brain responsible for memory and learning. Cannabis lets the brain moderate and reduces outbursts of traumatic memories. This reduces the symptoms such as anxiety. The effects allow the PTSD patient to function and have a suffering-free life.
5. ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
A survey shows that cannabis may help reduce specific ALS symptoms. The symptoms include drooling, appetite loss, spasticity, pain, and depression. Taking cannabis can enhance the effects of opioid pain relievers for ALS patients.
6. Crohn's Disease
Research shows a direct link between Crohn’s symptoms and cannabis. Patients who take this drug notice significant improvement. A study in 2020 showed that 15 percent of Crohn’s patients with IBD experienced relief from fatigue, abdominal pain, and anorexia. They also had reduced nausea, joint pain, and diarrhea.
7. Parkinson's Disease
Cannabis affects the peripheral and central nervous systems. The substance can improve slow movements, loss of balance, stiffness, and tremors from Parkinson’s disease. A study back in 2017 found that using medical marijuana for at least three months for Parkinson’s improved the symptoms. There were no major side effects. Cannabis can also help improve memory, mood, and sleep issues.
